Christian Atsu: The untold story of the African Messi

Today, the world commiserates with the family of Ghanaian player Christian Atsu Twasam who died in a tragic earthquake incident in Antakaya, Turkey. 

The 31-yr old winger was a player for Turkish side Hatayaspor prior to his untimely death. He played three times and scored one and the last goal of his career ; a winner against Kasimpasa. 

Christian is unarguably one of the best players to have ever graced the African continent, with his excellent dribbling, amazing passing, vision and scoring abilities, he quickly captured the attention of the world after signing for Chelsea FC from Porto. 

His impeccable club and country career is an asset to his legacy and Ghana Football.

Career Profile

Born in Ada Foah, Ghana, on 10 January 1992, Christian Atsu scored 23 times in 207 club career games and 9 goals in 65 appearances for Ghana 🇬🇭, and led the Black Stars to a runner-up position in the 2015 AFCON, as well as winning the Best Player of the tournament.

Youth and Senior Career

His youth career began with locally -based sides Feynoord Fetteh and Kasoa-based Cheetah FC before moving to Porto in 2009-2011. He was subsequently loaned to Vitesse Arhem (Netherlands) from 2013-14, Everton (2014-15), Bournemouth (2015-16), Newcastle United (2016-21), Malaga (2016), Al Raed (2021-22), and lastly joined Hatayaspor in September 2022.

Christian Atsu represented Ghana at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and 4 AFCON tournaments before winning Silver at the 2015 AFCON where he also won the Most Valuable Player, as well as the Best Goal of the tournament respectively.

Humanitarian Achievements

His off-field activities included humanitarian and charity works for the orphanage and less privileged people in the Ghanaian society, which led him to become the Brand Ambassador for Arms around the Child Charity network.

Furthermore, he sponsored the acquittal of several wrongly-accused prison inmates at the Nsawam Prisons in Ghana. To mention but a few, Christian Atsu Twasam is a legend whose legacy will continue to live on inspite of his death.

Until his death, Atsu was survived by his Portuguese wife, Claire-Rupio and two beautiful children.

As he is laid to rest today, at the Forecourt of the State House Assembly, Ghana,  we pray that the good Lord will grant his humble soul eternal rest. Amen.
