The West Africans picked up their third title since 2015 and became the first host nation to win the competition after Egypt in 2006. In a much anticipated final that saw the 60,000 capacity Alassane Ouattara stadium filled to the brim, both West African nations exhibited high-level football with the Ivoriens dominating the encounter on possession. The Super Eagles got into the lead through a Moses Truust-Ekong header in the 38th minute which sent thrills throughout the stadium. By Michael Osei  Super Eagles Nigeria booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON for the first time since 2013 after beating South Africa on penalties at the Stade Bouake. After a slow start, the Eagles got into the lead via a Moses Truust-Ekong penalty awarded after Victor Osimehn was fouled in the box. The game metamorphosed into a fiesty encounter with both sides creating begging chances that ended in futility. Truust-Ekong celebrate opener  Victor Osimehn grabbed a second goal for the Nigerians after cooly tapping in from a Frank Onyeka cross which was disallowed after the referee's consultation with VAR. South Africa was awarded a penalty after the VAR showed Percy Tau was fouled in the box.  Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped up to level matters before Mudau missed a golden opportunity to win it for the South Africans in extra time.
