The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has shortlisted referees to officiate at the upcoming FIFA world cup in Qatar.

Among the referees selected were six male Africans, and three females including an African who will grace the occasion for the first time in the history of the prestigious competition.

About the referees

Stephanie Frappart (Ist in Yellow)

The 38-yr-old French referee who also double as a grade A UEFA official officiated the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final match between Liverpool and Chelsea in Istanbul, Turkey, where Chelsea lost 1-2 to Liverpool. She was widely accredited for her impressive performance in the competition where the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was introduced for the first time.

Mukansanga is the first African female referee to officiate in the world cup. The 33-yr-old Rwandan was an official at the 2019 FIFA women's world cup in France, the CAF women's cup of Nations, and CAF women's champions league. She was also the first female referee to officiate in an AFCON match between Zimbabwe and Guinea where the East Africans won by two goals to one.

Yoshimi Yamashita (2nd in pic)

Born in Tokyo, Japan, the 36-yr-old Japanese is unarguably one the best female referees in the world. She handled the Asian champions league final match between Australia side, Melbourne City and South Korean club Jeonnam Dragons, where the Australians won by two goals to one.

These female referees were selected based on their impressive performance in their estimation of the game, and will be expected to deliver same in the upcoming mundial which starts on November 21.
