Surprises continued to spring up in European football recently especially in the English Premier League and the La Liga Santander. Real Madrid and Chelsea recorded emphatic wins ahead of crucial champions league quarter final 2nd leg tie in Spain on Wednesday night, while Tottenham Hotspur secured a champions league qualification spot.

First, the Blues bounced back after two defeats to Brentford and Real Madrid respectively with a 6-0 drubbing of Southampton at St.Mary's stadium.

2023 AFCON: Triumphant Elephants win third AFCON Title on home soil

The West Africans picked up their third title since 2015 and became the first host nation to win the competition after Egypt in 2006. In a much anticipated final that saw the 60,000 capacity Alassane Ouattara stadium filled to the brim, both West African nations exhibited high-level football with the Ivoriens dominating the encounter on possession. The Super Eagles got into the lead through a Moses Truust-Ekong header in the 38th minute which sent thrills throughout the stadium. Nigeria looked hungry for glory but managed to end the first half on a lone goal after creating a few good chances. The beauty of the AFCON cannot be matched when a resurgent Ivorien side that lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in the group phase of the competition stepped up to redeem their image in a thrilling 4-5 penalty win over defending champions Senegal. Hamad Diallo got on the score sheet blasting home a thunderous shot four minutes into the encounter to give the Teranga Lions the lead.
