Lady luck ran out Manchester United and Ajax Amsterdam as both teams were shockingly knocked out of the competition.

Renan Lodi's first half header sealed a 1-0 well deserved win for impressive Athletico who kept their shape in a tactically fit encounter at the Old Trafford. The current La Liga champions advanced on a (2-1) aggregate after holding the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

In the same vein, SL Benfica secured an infamous win away in Amsterdam beating Ajax 1-0 courtesy of Darwin Nunéz's second half brilliant header to ensure a spot in the last eight for the first time since 2015/2016.✅They qualified on a (3-2) aggregate after playing out a 2-2 draw in the first leg encounter.

Both clubs now join the rest of the already qualified teams: Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, whilst awaiting results  of the games between Juventus and Villarreal, Chelsea and French champions Losc Lille.

2023 AFCON: Triumphant Elephants win third AFCON Title on home soil

By Michael Osei  2023 AFCON WINNERS  The Elephants of Cote D'Ivoire have won the 2023 AFCON after beating Nigeria in regulation time. The West Africans picked up their third title since 2015 and became the first host nation to win the competition after Egypt in 2006. In a much anticipated final that saw the 60,000 capacity Alassane Ouattara stadium filled to the brim, both West African nations exhibited high-level football with the Ivoriens dominating the encounter on possession. The Super Eagles got into the lead through a Moses Truust-Ekong header in the 38th minute which sent thrills throughout the stadium. Nigeria looked hungry for glory but managed to end the first half on a lone goal after creating a few good chances. Comeback Kings: Ivory coast stun Senegal to book AFCON quarter -finals berth

By Michael Osei  Jubilant Elephants  Senegal got eliminated from the ongoing 2023 AFCON on penalties by a resilient Ivory Coast side after playing out an exciting 1-1 draw in full-time. The beauty of the AFCON cannot be matched when a resurgent Ivorien side that lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in the group phase of the competition stepped up to redeem their image in a thrilling 4-5 penalty win over defending champions Senegal. Hamad Diallo got on the score sheet blasting home a thunderous shot four minutes into the encounter to give the Teranga Lions the lead. The game progresssd into a high tempo duel with both teams creating and missing beautiful chances.
